If you are planning to hire a private respite worker or aide, you will need to assess your family's needs, interests, and expectations.

Below are sample interview questions you can use when interviewing a potential respite worker or aide:

  1. Please tell me about yourself.
  2. Please expand on your experience working with people with disabilities
  3. Why are you interested in providing care services?
  4. Describe your strengths and areas you are working on.
  5. What hours are you able to work? Are there specific times or days you are unable to work?
  6. Are you willing to take my child out of the home for activities?
  7. Do you have any special training or experience you would like me to be aware of?
  8. If my child is upset or angry, how will you handle the situation?
  9. Do you consider yourself a self-starter? Are you prepared to come up with creative ideas and activities or do you prefer a specific plan to be given to you?
  10. Do you have a valid Police Check, Vulnerable Person's Check, First Aid/CPR, and/or Driver's License?

Interviewing Tip:

Consider booking an interview at your home when your child is present and during a busy time of day. This can allow the interviewee to get an honest look at the challenges and you can see how they respond.
